Hewlett-Packard Series 700 Image 2.0
The Series 700 has an image functionality built into the standard run
time environment. This image functionality is designed to make the use
of raster images an everyday occurance much in the same manner that
text is used today.
Because the image functionality is layered upon
standard X-Windows, the user gets all of the client/server advantages
of X. Thus, both X- terminals and workstations can make use of HP's
image functionality.
Key Benefits
All Series 700 users can depend on being able to use and
view images.
Interoperable with virtually any platform through the
support of industry standard image types.
Data compression saves
disk space allowing pervasive/everyday use.
Image Components
Imageview
Imageview is a simple viewer for all of the image types supported by
the image library. It is a Motif-based application that is also fully
integrated into the HP MPower environment. For example: Double
clicking on an image file launches the imageview application and loads
the file. The user can zoom in on
arbitrary areas of specific interest or resize the image by merely
dragging a corner of the window.
Image Library
A shared library that does the work for the end user and the software
developer. This library:
o Reads and writes images from X-Windows,
application buffers and files
o Compresses and decompresses images
o Provides run time extensibility for new/custom file types (EFS)
o Manipulates images by cropping, scaling, 90 degree rotations,
mirroring, and tonal remapping
o Scales bitonal images to grey scale
images (helpful in rendering higher resolution images on displays)
o Automatically dithers, checks 8-plane display hardware, and maps
pixels before displaying images
o Provides for gamma correction and
selectible dithering (area or error diffusion)
o Provides an extensible image manipulation capability
o Can simultaneously display
different color images sharing a common palette on 8-plane displays
o Allows multiple simultaneous image destinations for both display
windows and image files
The new features for Version 2.0 are:
extensible image manipulation, selectible dithering, multiple image
destinations, JPEG, GIF, CCITT Group 4, X bitmap, Starbase BMF file
type support, and Extended File Support (EFS). The following table
reviews the file type support:

full use of the image lib from the command line or shell scripts
Ordering Information
Image Viewer and Image Library
Bundled with HP-UX 9.0 for the Series
700 and 800. This allows both end users and software developers to
have a dependable operating environment. The image capability is
always there.
Image Developer's Toolkit:
The Image Developer's Toolkit (P/N B2157A)
is a separate toolkit that focuses on the software developer's needs.
Version 2.0 shipping December 1992.
